Regular ear cleaning can help prevent ear infections from occurring. To clean ears we recommend using ear cleaners available from our hospital. A small amount of solution is placed in the ear. Gently rub the base of the ear to work in the solution. Using a cotton ball, swab out your pet’s ear. Repeat using a clean cotton ball until no more debris is found on the cotton.

Ear mites are tiny white parasites that live in the ear canal of dogs and cats. They are highly contagious and frequently infest whole litters of puppies and kittens. If more than one pet is present in the home and one is found to be infected, all should be examined for ear mites. Severe ear infections may develop as a result of injury to the ear canal caused by the mites. A dark, crusty material is found in an infected ear. Head shaking or scratching are common signs. Treatment consists of applying medication directly to the ears during an office visit.
