Kittens will bite each other as a form of play and also to establish dominance over each other. If your kitten grabs your finger, legs or clothing say, “No” and take your finger or clothing away from the kitten.
Cats love to climb and perch on top of tall objects. They also like to sharpen their claws. They can quickly destroy your drapes and furniture and require prompt correction. As soon as you see your kitten climbing or sharpening, say “No” and take her to a cat tree or scratching post. If that doesn’t work, take a small can filled with marbles or coins and shake it whenever you see your cat engage in these destructive behaviors. The noise should frighten her away. Another way to discourage these activities is to squirt her with water from a squirt gun when you catch her misbehaving.
If your cat doesn’t respond to these training methods, the only other way to stop the damage from climbing or scratching is to declaw your cat or to glue plastic caps (SoftPaws) over each claw. The caps usually stay on for a short period of time and require frequent replacement. They are most useful in kittens too young for surgery or very old cats where surgery might be unwise.
Kittens and cats show some behaviors that can be objectionable at home. The most common of these are biting, jumping up on counter tops and tables, climbing and sharpening claws.
