We generally recommend staying away from generic or bargain foods as most do not have a consistent formulation and are not tested by feeding trials. Brand name cat foods such as Purina and Friskies provide adequate nutrition and most cats do well on these diets. Premium cat food brands such as Science Diet and Eukanuba are consistently formulated with high-quality meat ingredients rather than meat byproducts and do not contain as many fillers and beet fiber as some of the less expensive diets. Because of this, some owners notice that they also feed less volume and see less stool produced. These companies also give a money-back guarantee if your kitten or cat does not eat their food.
Cats will normally snack on food throughout the day rather than eat regular meals. To satisfy this habit, we recommend feeding one or two meals of canned food a day and leaving a dish of dry food for your cat to eat when ever wanted. All three forms of food, dry, canned and semi-moist, are completely balanced having all the vitamins, minerals and proteins that a cat needs to grow and stay healthy. There is no advantage to feeding one over the other. When your kitten reaches 5 months of age you should gradually switch from kitten food to an adult maintenance food.
