The three most common intestinal worms found in kittens are Roundworm, Hookworm, and Whipworm. These are spread in one of two ways, either by eating worm larvae found in the soil and grass, or kittens can get the larvae from their mother before they are born or when nursing. The Tapeworm is another type of worm we see frequently in cats. This worm is contracted when a cat eats a flea that has the tapeworm larvae in its tissues.
To tell if your pet has worms and what kind requires a microscopic examination of a fresh stool sample. We suggest that you bring in a sample every year for an examination. Two doses of medication are usually required to effectively treat your cat for worms.
